Spring Cleaning the Capital

April 15 to May 15, 2010

Show your community pride and join the volunteers who take part in the City's Spring and Fall Cleaning the Capital campaigns! Clean up around your workplace or an area in your neighbourhood and help keep Ottawa clean, green, graffiti-free and litter-free!

Each year the Spring and Fall Cleaning the Capital campaigns encourage and support community involvement in the City's cleanup efforts. Entire communities - including schools, neighbourhood organizations and associations, businesses, families, friends and individuals take up the Cleaning the Capital challenge. A record 87,409 participants made Cleaning the Capital 2009 the most successful campaign to date! Let's build on this success and make our 2010 campaign another record year! Register your spring litter cleanup and/or graffiti cleanup project until May 15 by completing the online registration form: www.ottawa.ca/clean.

Building Permit Fees Reduced

For the second year in a row City Council has approved a reduction in building permit fees on all construction projects. The building permit fee has been reduced from $12.50 to $12.00 per $1,000 in construction value. For farm buildings, the fee has been reduced from $8.75 to $8.40 per $1,000 in value. These fee reductions took effect May 1, and will help reduce construction costs for businesses and residents.

The building permit fee reduction is consistent with the Building Code Act, which stipulates that the revenues from fees must not exceed the costs required to administer and enforce the Act and the Building Code.

The City’s construction and development industry was busier than anticipated in 2009, partly thanks to a federal tax-relief program for home renovations. As a result there was an increase in permit applications for house additions and related projects. Building Code Services staff processed and reviewed almost 10,000 building permits and applications, and completed over 100,000 inspections.

For more information on the City’s building permit fees, visit www.ottawa.ca/buildingcode.

Green Bin Update

Starting Tuesday, April 6 City of Ottawa residents now have their green bins and leaf and yard waste collected every week. Organic food scraps, soiled paper products and other allowable waste from residential homes can now be placed at the curb for weekly collection.

Weekly green bin and leaf and yard waste collection starts in April and continues during the spring, summer and fall. In December green bins will return to collection every other week.

Residents are reminded to put their green bin and recycling out with their garbage by 7 a.m. for collection on their assigned pick-up day. Lock the lid to deter animals and prevent pests from getting into the bin. Leaf and yard waste can be used to top up the green bin. It can also be placed in a separate container such as an unused garbage container with the lid off so that collection workers can see it is leaf and yard waste.

The Green Bin program is contributing to increasing the amount of residential garbage diverted away from landfill. This is a strong indication that residents are embracing the program, and together we are achieving our goals. The City expects the diversion numbers will increase when weekly collection starts next week.

Any resident who has green bin collection and has not yet received an information package, can contact 3-1-1. More information about what goes in your green bin and collection dates check your Collection Calendar or visit www.ottawa.ca/greenbin.

2010 Food Aid BBQ

The annual Food Aid BBQ is taking place at Marion Dewar Plaza, outside of City Hall, 110 Laurier Ave. West on Friday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The BBQ will bring the Ottawa Food Bank that much closer to raising $150,000 - the necessary funds to sustain its beef program for a year.

For only $10, hamburgers prepared by The WORKS will be served alongside chips and a drink. There will be plenty to see and do with music, a live broadcast by 580 CFRA, displays by rural businesses, and a celebrity milking competition all on tap. As well, the Ottawa Food Bank’s Capital Beef Cookbook will be on sale for $15.

Food Aid is a program that provides nutritious protein to those who normally would not be able to afford it. All Food Aid fundraising efforts go toward purchasing and processing beef from local producers, boosting the local market for cattle.

Since the program’s inception in 2005, Food Aid has provided over 481,984 pounds of local beef to the most vulnerable in our community.

The program accepts donations of cows for processing. If you are a farmer interested in donating a cow to Food Aid, please contact the Rural Affairs Office at ruralaffairs@ottawa.ca or 613-580-2424 x28352 for more information on the tax receipt benefits and how you can participate.

South Nepean Satellite Community Health Centre Volunteer Opportunity
Rural Representative sought

The South Nepean Satellite Community Health Centre (SNCHC) opened late 2009. As a community based primary health care organization, the SNCHC has an Advisory Committee in place to provide information and advice to assist us in our services.

The Advisory Committee includes representatives from the Nepean Rideau Osgoode Community Resource Centre, a key partner for the satellite, and representatives from the Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre, the sponsor of the SNCHC. We are looking for 4 community members to join us in our work.

The committee meets on average 3 times/year. We are seeking individuals who have an interest in the health, have a knowledge and/or experience with some of the challenges individuals face (e.g. low income, mental health issues, language, culture), and would like to provide volunteer time to help support the SNCHC.

For more information, please contact Wanda MacDonald at 613-820-4925 ext. 375 (w.macdonald@pqchc.com) or Sandy Wooley at 613- 596-5626 (swooley@nrocrc.org).

If you are interested in putting your name forward, please send a letter outlining your background and experience and why you are interested in this volunteer opportunity by Friday May 7th 2010 by e-mail to w.macdonald@pqchc.com or by mail to Wanda MacDonald c/o South Nepean CHC, 4100 Strandherd Drive, Suite 201, Ottawa, ON K2J 0V2, tel.613-288-2820 fax.613-288-3690
