Livestock valuers required by the City of Ottawa

The City of Ottawa is seeking members of the community with the required skills and knowledge to act as valuers of damage to livestock and poultry, as prescribed by the Livestock, Poultry and Honey Bee Protection Act.  Valuers must be able to adhere to strict deadlines, have good organizational and accurate reporting skills, and be willing to complete or have completed the required training provided by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Valuers must be familiar with farming, livestock production and wildlife management issues. Experience with claim management and program administration is beneficial.  Residence in or near Rideau-Goulbourn Ward or Cumberland Ward is preferred. Use of a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license are also required.  Remuneration will be on a per call basis.  A more detailed description of the requirements for livestock valuers is available by calling the Rural Affairs Office at 613-580-2424, ext. 28352 or responding to this email.

We invite you to complete and submit your resume and cover letter by 4 pm on June 15, 2009 to City of Ottawa - Rural Affairs Office, 110 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa, Ontario, K1P 1J1, 01-96A or e-mail to ruralaffairs@ottawa.ca. Only those being considered for an interview will be contacted.

Apply now for Rural Association Partnership Program Funding - Round Two

The City of Ottawa invites rural business organizations, fairs and farmers markets to apply for the second round of funding through the 2009 Rural Association Partnership Program. The Rural Association Partnership Program is aimed at supporting the rural economy through access to one common funding program.  Eligible projects include strategic planning on a local level, research and feasibility studies, tourism initiatives, and events as well as small-scale technology or capital projects. Submissions that demonstrate active partnerships are encouraged. Funding is granted on a matching basis of 50 per cent of the eligible project expenses, up to $7,500 per project.

Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis using a peer evaluation process and must be received by Monday June 15, 2009 at 4 pm. Detailed program guidelines and the application can be downloaded from the City’s website at www.ottawa.ca/rural.

The Food Aid BBQ is Back

The annual Food Aid BBQ is taking place at Festival Plaza at City Hall, 110 Laurier Ave. West on Friday, June 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The BBQ will bring the Ottawa Food Bank that much closer to raising $150,000 - the necessary funds to sustain its beef program for a year. For only $10, hamburgers prepared by The WORKS will be served alongside chips and a drink. There will be plenty to see and do at Festival Plaza, with music, a live broadcast by 580 CFRA, and a celebrity milking competition all on tap. As well, the Ottawa Food Bank’s Capital Beef Cookbook will be on sale for only $15.  Food Aid is a program that provides nutritious protein to those who normally would not be able to afford it. All Food Aid fundraising efforts go toward purchasing and processing beef from local producers. Food Aid is an initiative that boosts the local market for cattle. Since the program’s inception in 2005, Food Aid has provided nearly 400,000 pounds of local beef to the most vulnerable in our community.  The event on June 5 will also feature a Rural Showcase, with displays from members of Ottawa Countryside (www.ottawascountryside.ca). Food Aid is supported by the City of Ottawa Rural Affairs Office.

Cumberland Farmers' Market opens June 13

What is Best Start?

Best Start is an Ontario government early learning and care strategy designed to help give our children the best possible start in life. The initiative aims to ensure that children are prepared and eager to achieve success in school by the time they start Grade One and to provide families with improved access to quality, evidence-informed, neighbourhood-based early learning experiences. It calls for community stakeholders to work collaboratively to address the factors that put young children at risk and to create communities that support healthy child development and learning.

What will it look like in Ottawa’s rural communities?

Community partners who are engaged in Ottawa Best Start Initiative planning are working towards pairing our skills with those of parents and community stakeholders to create a more seamless system of neighbourhood-based supports for our children. Local neighbourhood-based planning groups, evolving from the Best Start Planning Tables, have begun work in the rural communities of West Carleton and Metcalfe.

When Best Start is successful in our communities, we will see outcomes such as:

  • increased parent awareness of community services available for children and families
  • improved service provider capacity to make referrals to neighbourhood-based early learning and care services and programs
  • increased collaboration on planning and delivery of programs in the community
  • improved quality of services achieved through planning in response to the needs of children, families and the community
  • increased parent understanding of early childhood developmental issues and how parents play a pivotal role in supporting this development

What Could Best Start look like in your community?

Drinking Water Source Protection in Carp

The Source Protection Committee (SPC) continues to review preliminary draft technical studies that show us where local municipal drinking water comes from and where it should be protected.  Last month the SPC reviewed the groundwater studies for Carp and approved the study findings as draft for public consultation. An open house has been organized to share these results with the public and solicit their input on June 8 - Carp Fairgrounds, 3790 Carp Road, from 6pm to 9pm with a formal presentation by staff at 7pm. Light refreshments will be available and everyone is encouraged to attend!  For more information, visit www.mrsourcewater.ca or call 613-692-3571.

ATV Riding is not child's play

In many cases where children have been injured or killed in an ATV incident, the parents were unaware that ATVs:

  • Roll over easily. ATVs have a high centre of gravity, make them more likely to roll over and land on the rider.
  • Are not meant for passengers.  Most ATVs are built for one person.  Passengers can affect the stability and control of the ATV, causing them to tip more easily.
  • Can weigh up to 800 lbs. Adult sized machines pose a high risk to children under 16 due to the drastic differences in weight between the child and the machine.
  • Are responsible for multiple childhood injuries and deaths *. In 2005/2006 the Eastern Ontario region had about 1,000 emergency department visits and 90 hospitalizations for all ages. Twenty-three percent of emergency department visits and 14 percent of hospitalizations were for children under 16 years.
