Lansdowne Park’s Urban Park Designs

Five proposed designs have been provided by the firms invited to compete for the design of Lansdowne Park’s open space. All submissions include both a written description and visuals, and are anonymous to ensure that the firms are not identified in any way. To view each one, just click on the links below.

An effective way to appreciate the differences among the options is to view the designs when they are on display at the following locations:

Ottawa City Hall

110 Laurier Avenue West, beside Jean Pigott Hall

Lansdowne Park

Some highlights of the different proposals include:

Design A

  • Inlet from canal under Queen Elizabeth Dr. for boats and ice skating

  • Large front lawn

  • Expanded Sylvia Holden Park

  • Market operates inside Horticulture Building and outside

  • Tobogganing

  • Cost: $37.5 million


Design B 

  • Several species of plants and trees, creating a forest and apple orchard

  • Outdoor curling sheets

  • Year-round market and retail in Horticulture Building

  • Island on canal with “Algonquin Pavilion”

  • Large contemporary bridge connecting Old Ottawa South

  • Water beacon

  • Cost: $68 million


Design C

  • Market, nightclub, cafes, webcam video tower in Aberdeen Pavilion

  • Reconfigured Horticulture Building

  • Bandstand

  • Floating islands on canal

  • Ponds and wetlands

  • Canal boardwalk and dock

  • Footbridge connecting Old Ottawa South

  • Cost: 57.6 million


Design D

  • Ribbon-style bridge over canal, turns into walkway

  • Outdoor theatre

  • Sheltered market

  • Pond

  • Unaltered Sylvia Holden Park

  • Hard top esplanade between canal and Aberdeen Pavilion

  • Cost: $32.8 million


Design E

  • Telescopic glass canopy from Aberdeen Pavilion

  • Large pond and waterside square

  • Pedestrian bridge from Old Ottawa South

  • Canal inlets

  • Renovated Horticulture Building holds market

  • Cost: $88 million


Residents will be able to provide their comments on the proposed designs until May 31. The feedback received will be collected and reviewed by the Lansdowne Strategic Design Review and Advisory Panel, City Council, NCC, Parks Canada Agency and the competition jury.

The five designs are also on display at various locations across the city from May 20 to 30, 2010.
